But Padova is not all one thing. Its neighbourhoods have distinct characters, and choosing the right one shapes your entire stay. At Tailor Homes, we manage short-term and medium-term apartments across the city — so we know every street of it. Here’s what we’d tell a friend.
1. Centro Storico — For Tourists, First-Timers & Culture Lovers
The historic centre of Padova is the obvious choice and, for most visitors, the right one. Staying here means everything is walkable — the Basilica di Sant’Antonio, the Cappella degli Scrovegni (home to Giotto’s extraordinary frescoes), the Palazzo della Ragione, and the market piazzas of Erbe and Frutta are all within 10 minutes on foot.
The centro is dense with cafes, osterie, and restaurants. The famous spritz culture is at its best here, particularly around the university area in the evenings. The arcaded streets — Padova has more covered porticoes than almost any other Italian city — mean you can walk for hours in the rain without getting wet.
Padova’s historic heart. Best for tourists, weekend visits, and anyone who wants maximum access to culture, food, and atmosphere without a car.
2. Prato della Valle — For Families, Long Stays & Quiet Elegance
Just south of the Basilica sits one of Europe’s largest piazzas: Prato della Valle. The elliptical square, ringed by statues and divided by waterways, defines the southern edge of the historic centre. The streets radiating from it — Via Umberto I, Via Beato Pellegrino, Via Cesare Battisti — are quieter, more residential, and offer some of Padova’s most beautiful apartment buildings.
Families and medium-term guests often prefer this area. It’s still central enough to be convenient, but the pace is calmer. Weekend mornings bring an antiques market to the square; the nearby Orto Botanico (the world’s oldest academic botanical garden, and a UNESCO heritage site) is on your doorstep.
Elegant, residential, and beautifully located. Ideal for families, medium-term stays, and anyone who values quiet streets without sacrificing the city centre.
3. Portello & Via Belzoni — For University Students & Young Professionals
The northern arc of the city centre — particularly the Portello area and the streets around Via Belzoni — is where the student energy concentrates. The University of Padova, one of the oldest universities in the world (founded in 1222), is spread across the city, but the Portello zone has a particularly strong academic presence with faculties, libraries, and research institutes.
For students renting in Padova and young professionals on medium-term assignments, this is a practical and affordable choice. The new tram line connects the area directly to the train station in under 10 minutes. Supermarkets, pharmacies, and all daily services are within easy reach. The social scene is excellent — aperitivo bars and restaurants along Via Venezia and Via Corsica are reliably good value.
The city’s academic heartbeat. Excellent for university students, researchers, and professionals on medium-term stays. Active, connected, and great value.
4. San Carlo & Arcella — For Professionals, Relocators & Longer Stays
North of the historic walls, the San Carlo and Arcella districts are Padova’s most residential neighbourhoods. These areas are popular with professionals relocating to Padova for work — typically those joining the large medical and research institutions, or working in the industrial and logistics corridor toward Mestre.
Apartments here are generally larger, quieter, and offer better value than the centro for the same level of finish. The neighbourhood has everything you need day-to-day, and the bus and tram connections to the city centre take under 15 minutes. For anyone planning a medium-term furnished rental in Padova lasting two to six months, this is often where the best-value quality lives.
Padova’s most liveable residential district. Best for professionals, relocating workers, and anyone wanting more space and quieter surroundings on a medium-to-long stay.
Which Neighbourhood Is Right For You?
Here’s the simplest way to think about it:
Coming for a few nights or a week? Stay in the Centro Storico. You’ll walk everywhere and experience the best of the city without a single taxi.
Coming with family or for a relaxed medium-term stay? Look at Prato della Valle and the surrounding streets. Elegant, quiet, and still perfectly central.
Studying or doing research at the university? Portello and Via Belzoni put you in the middle of student life with excellent connections everywhere else.
Relocating for work or planning a stay of several months? San Carlo and Arcella give you the best quality-to-value ratio in the city — and the space to actually feel at home.
